It is often assumed that your bill only relates to space heating. However, the heat you use for hot water makes up a significant proportion of your consumption. Due to the nature of heat networks, the Heat Interface Unit (HIU) in your property will often have a small amount of heat passing through, also known as the “keep warm function”. This enables the heating and hot water to be delivered almost immediately. This is a standard setting on most HIUs.
‘Bypass consumption’ may occur for this reason and will generally account for 1-3 kilowatt hours of consumption/day, which is an average figure, and might vary according to the heat network specifications and your HIU settings. This will apply even if heat isn’t being actively used within your apartment. It is generally a small amount but will explain why you might see heat consumption on your bills even though the property is empty.
