Who should I contact if I have an issue with the heating equipment in my home?

  • Updated

The right person to contact depends on the type of equipment and whether you own or rent your home.

If you own your home

Equipment inside your apartment is often your responsibility to maintain. This may include:

  • Thermostats
  • Radiators
  • Taps
  • Underfloor heating controls

Your lease agreement will set out exactly what you’re responsible for, so it’s worth checking if you’re unsure.

If you rent your home

Please contact your landlord or letting agent first. They’ll be able to advise who is responsible and arrange any necessary repairs.

What about the HIU and heat meter?

The Heat Interface Unit (HIU) and heat meter are usually treated differently because they’re connected to the building’s communal heating system.

In many developments, responsibility for these sits with the Building Owner or Freeholder, although this can vary. Your lease agreement will confirm who is responsible in your development.

Why can’t Data Energy help?

Data Energy is your metering and billing agent. We don’t own or maintain the heating equipment in your property, so we’re usually unable to arrange repairs or investigate faults.

Not sure who’s responsible?

For a simple guide to the organisations involved in running your development and their responsibilities, please see our article: Who’s responsible for what in my building?
