Why is my consumption higher than expected?

  • Updated

If your bill is based on actual meter readings, it has been calculated using data sent directly from the meter in your apartment.

We are required to use these readings when producing your bill. This means we can only amend your consumption charges if an investigation confirms that there is a fault with the meter or metering system.

Common reasons for higher consumption

Your heating settings

If you pay for heating based on usage, your thermostat settings can have a significant impact on your energy consumption.

A thermostat set higher than necessary will use more energy and increase your costs.

For most homes, we recommend setting your thermostat to 20-21°C. This is usually a comfortable temperature while helping to keep energy use under control.

Increased hot water use

It's easy to focus on heating, but hot water can make up a significant part of your energy consumption.

Activities such as showering, bathing, washing up and running hot taps all contribute to your usage.

Seasonal changes

During colder months, heating systems generally need to work harder to maintain the same indoor temperature. This can result in higher consumption compared with warmer periods of the year.

Check your meter reading history

You can view your meter reading history through your Customer Portal account. This can help you understand how your consumption has changed over time.

If you haven't registered yet, you'll find your login details on the bottom right-hand corner of your bill under the Customer Portal section.
